It‘s been a long time coming but Batman fans everywhere, as of this morning, finally know who the Caped Crusader will be facing off against in Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight Rises, the third, and final, instalment of his trilogy.
By all accounts, the competition was tough to say the least with a bevy of hot young Hollywood things vying for the role but Anne Hathaway (recently seen wearing not very much at all in Love And Other Drugs) has emerged victorious and will play Selina Kyle in Bat‘s threequel. Selina who? Well, for those not clued up on their Batman lore, Miss. Kyle is the original Catwoman. She‘ll be keeping some hard–hitting company too as Bane makes his franchise debut. Tom Hardy (Bronson, Inception), already cast, will play the muscle–bound wrestler – Batman‘s very antithesis, a brutal guy who starts with nothing and wants to take over Gotham‘s criminal underworld through sheer force alone. In the comics Bane once broke Batman‘s spine, putting the vigilante out of action for quite a while. The character did however make an ill thought out appearance in 1997‘s execrable Batman & Robin.
In a press release issued by Warner Brothers, Nolan had this to say about the casting; "I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story." And about Hardy, he says: "I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman‘s most formidable enemies."
Meanwhile rumours still abound that Eva Green (Casino Royale) is close to signing on as Talia al Ghul, daughter of Ra‘s al Ghul (played by Liam Neeson in Batman Begins), and Naomi Watts could well join the cast too as a love interest for Bruce Wayne.
